The Athena SWAN Charter was established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine in higher education and research and was expanded in May 2015 to aim for gender equality for all staff in all subject areas in academia.

BSMS, run by the universities of 欧美性爱片 and Sussex, was awarded a Bronze Award in April 2015 following its commitment to addressing gender equality in the areas of representation, career progression and working environment.

To support these aims, BSMS created an Inclusivity Team, which is made up of staff and students from all parts of the school. Through its Inclusivity Team, BSMS has launched a number of initiatives, including a ‘Diversity in Medicine’ talk series for staff and students, a mentoring scheme and a networking club for staff, increased support for promotion and a bespoke induction scheme as well as the 'inspirational women of BSMS' photo series, which celebrates the diversity, achievements and careers of its female staff.

Natasha Sigala, Senior Lecturer and Diversity co-Lead at BSMS, said: "I am delighted that BSMS has been recognised for all the work it is doing to support its staff. Silver status confirms that the targeted actions we have taken since our Bronze award have had a positive impact on staff and students. It is a fantastic achievement for the medical school.

“Achieving this award demonstrates how committed we are to embedding a positive culture at BSMS and ensuring it continues to be an outstanding place to work for all staff. Our challenge now is to continue to implement initiatives and practices which make a real difference to the working lives of all our staff and students."

The Athena SWAN Silver Award, valid until November 2021, will be presented to BSMS at the Equality Charters awards ceremony on 16 July 2018, at Swansea University.
