Now she’s a second year engineering student at the university and thriving in an environment she finds stimulating and rewarding.

“Looking back, it changed my whole outlook on what I wanted to do with my future,” said Kyra of her experience at the summer school. “It really did open my eyes.”

Kyra participated in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) sessions at the school. From today until Friday, schoolchildren will take part in workshops and lectures in STEM, social sciences, healthcare and humanities.

The school is designed to help prospective students think about what courses they would like to study as they consider their options in higher education. For Kyra, the event fulfilled this criteria.

“I loved every minute and learned about interesting options in STEM subjects,” she said. “The university helped me understand what my passions were. It solidified my decision to try and study at university and directed me to a whole new career path.”

Kyra added that she wouldn’t hesitate to encourage others to follow in her footsteps and sign up for any of the schools: “100%. It gave me a chance to experience the life of a student at university. It opened my mind so much.”

As well as getting a taster of various subjects, Kyra was pleased to find she was allowed time to explore the campus and halls of residence.

“It was nice to have free time in the evenings, which gave me an insight to the life of university students,” she said. “As my summer school was residential, I got to see the living style of halls, which showed me the independence I would need at university.”

Now, two years into her undergraduate degree, Kyra is benefiting from the university’s expert teaching and relishing the challenge.

“I finally got the chance to study a subject I’m really passionate about and I’m learning all of the cool things I will need to work in this field. I love it. It can be challenging sometimes but I have a lot of support at home and my friends help too.

“My lecturers are extremely helpful, which makes it easier.”

The STEM, humanities, social sciences and healthcare summer schools take place from today until Friday. Art and design, fashion, photography and sports schools are held later in the summer.
