New software to boost data protection and privacy

欧美性爱片 researchers are leading the development of new software designed to help companies and organisations comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

29 January 2019

The new regulation, which came into effect in May last year, is an European Union (EU) law on data protection and privacy and is aimed at giving more control to individuals over their personal data and at simplifying the regulatory environment.

The university’s Centre for Secure, Intelligent and Usable Systems (CSIUS) is heading the EU-funded project (DEFeND) which will deliver “an innovative data privacy governance platform to empower organisations in different sectors to assess and comply with the law and increase their operational capacity”

The 30-month research project is led by the university in collaboration with digital services provider ATOS (Spain), the international law firm Bird & Bird (UK), IT systems company Maticmid (Italy), IT company PDMFC (Portugal), Ionian University (Greece), software company GridPocket (France), the banking research and innovation centre ABILab (Italy), the Foundation for Biomedical Research Hospital Infantil Universitario Niño Jesús (Spain), and Peshtera Municipality (Bulgaria).

The overall cost of the project is €3.3M, with the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme co-funding €2.7M of that amount.

The DEFeND software platform will be tested in operational environments involving partners from four EU countries and in four different areas: healthcare, banks, energy and local government

Professor Haris Mouratidis, CSIUS Director and DEFeND project technical coordinator, said: “DEFeND brings together a strong team across Europe to deliver a novel software platform which supports organisational-focused privacy governance and addresses challenges faced by organisations when complying with GDPR.

“DEFeND spans over two levels – planning and operational, and across three management areas: date scope, data process and data breach.

“At planning level, the platform will support the development of models of the organisational data that capture information required for GDPR compliance such as identification of data and assets, organisational information and establishments, data transparency, lawfulness and minimisation, personal data consent and data breach information.

“At operational level, DEFeND will support the transformation of planning models to operational models that are employed to perform analysis that supports amongst others: data minimisation, data protection impact assessments and privacy-by-design and privacy-by-default principles.

“The university is bringing to the project significant experience and expertise in security and privacy-by-design methodologies and tools, as well as expertise in threat analysis, privacy requirements and risk management.”

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 787068.
