Dr Raphael Schlembach

Dr Raphael Schlembach is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology in the School of Applied Social Science. His research looks at criminal justice and social movements, both empirically and theoretically, with a current focus on the criminalisation of protest.

Raphael is a member of the Centre for Applied Philosophy, Politics and Ethics (CAPPE) and the Centre for Spatial, Environmental and Cultural Politics (SECP).

How I like to teach

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have previously held lecturing positions at Sussex, Liverpool Hope and Central Lancashire.

At the 欧美性爱片, our criminology programme is applied, engaged and critical. I am involved in teaching core topics in criminology and criminal justice, as well as specialist topics such the criminology of borders and the policing & criminalisation of protest.

I also supervise undergraduate dissertations and offer doctoral research supervision on my areas of expertise, including social movements, migration, criminalisation and social theory.

 

My research interests

Raphael’s research is in the areas of protest and social movements, criminology and criminal justice, and social and political theory. He is the author of a book on European social movements (Against Old Europe, Routledge) and he has published widely on protest, policing and critical theory. His work has been published in academic journals such as Citizenship Studies, Critical Social Policy, Environmental Politics, Sociology Compass and the European Journal of Social Theory.

He currently leads a research project that scrutinises the public inquiry into undercover policing in England and Wales, funded by the University’s Rising Stars Award.

Previously he has received the Colin Seymour-Ure prize for his undergraduate thesis from the University of Kent, a four-year studentship from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for his doctoral research at the University of Manchester and a Visiting Research Fellowship at the University of Nottingham.

Current research projects:

  • Protest networks and the undercover policing inquiry Research into the policing of protest, specifically the covert surveillance of protest networks in Britain, which is now being scrutinised by a public inquiry

  • Visiting Research Fellowship at the Centre for the Study of Social and Global Justice (CSSGJ) at the University of Nottingham in March/April 2013
  • Economic and Social Research Council (UK) – 1+3 studentship for Masters and PhD research at the University of Manchester 2006-2010

Biography

Raphael came to 欧美性爱片 as a Lecturer in Criminology in 2015. Prior to this he held teaching positions at the University of Sussex, Liverpool Hope University, and the University of Central Lancashire.

He developed his longstanding interest in the politics of social movements during undergraduate studies at the University of Kent (BA European Politics, 2005), where he was awarded the Colin Seymour-Ure dissertation prize by the School of Politics and International Relations. Raphael moved on to do an MSc in Sociological Research at the University of Manchester (awarded with Distinction in 2006).

Raphael’s PhD research was carried out in the Department of Sociology at the University of Manchester between 2006 and 2010.
