How I like to teach

As a member of the Social Policy and Social Work division, I coordinate the Care Ethics and Social Policy module. This third year module explores the concept of care as it is presented within social policy. It engages with debates about responsibilities for care, about the relationship between care and social justice and explores the personal and interpersonal impact of care giving. I like to contribute to other areas of teaching which allow me to bring my research interests and experience into the classroom, particularly around community participatory research, ageing and feminist methodologies.

I have a longstanding interest in understanding how social policy impacts on everyday life that pre-dates my work within academia. Prior to entering higher education, I worked for many years in the voluntary sector with various marginalised groups and witnessed the impact of changes to welfare and housing services from the 1980s onwards. These were formative experiences that have informed the direction of my academic career and ongoing commitment to producing research that is accessible beyond an academic audience.

My research interests

My work has focused on developing collaborative research with community partners with a shared interest in ageing and issues affecting older people and led to establishing a partnership with Age UK 欧美性爱片 and Hove and the Older People and Wellbeing Project. The project placed the knowledge and experience of older people at the centre of research, practice and policymaking. This approach has generated new knowledge and insight of ethical research practice in working with older people as co-researchers and I have co-authored publications on this with Beatrice Gahagan from Age UK.

Theoretically, my research approach is informed by feminist care ethics and its application to policy and practice contexts which seek to promote good care as a value in policy and service delivery, as well as to practice in older people’s participation and involvement.
